Acne Q & A

The Cosmetic Office of Dr. Platt

What causes acne?

A buildup of oil and skin cells inside the pores cause acne. When bacteria enter the clogged pores, it causes swelling and pus, or a pimple. Acne appears in three forms:

  • Whiteheads
  • Blackheads
  • Cystic lesions

Oily skin is prone to breakouts, and hormone changes during puberty and menstrual cycles sometimes cause the skin to produce more oil. Oil-based skin products also clog pores, leading to breakouts. Certain medications, such as corticosteroids and lithium, can also cause your skin to break out.

Dr. Platt can also prescribe a more potent prescription acne medication, if necessary. In some cases, hormonal birth control effectively controls acne. Dr. Platt discusses all your options with you and makes adjustments if certain approaches aren’t effective.

How can I get rid of acne?

At home, you can keep your face clean by washing it twice daily with a gentle cleanser. You may also want to use non-comedogenic cosmetics and facial products. An over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid acne cream may also be effective for more moderate blemishes.

If at-home techniques don’t reduce your acne, you can consult Dr. Platt for more potent acne treatments.

At the Cosmetic Office of Dr. Platt, you receive a personalized treatment plan based on your skin sensitivities. Dr. Platt uses a mixture of deep cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, and LightStim® light therapy to target your acne. She recommends supplementing in-office treatments with at-home care for the best results.
